We update our earlier estimates (Levitus et al., 2000) of ocean heat content for the world ocean with the additional 1.7
million temperature profiles that have become available as part of "World Ocean Database 2001". The results are
quantitatively similar through the early 1990s but the newer estimates are lower for the 1990s due to an error in processing
the XBT data for the earlier results. This difference does not affect any previous conclusions regarding the dominance of
ocean heat content in the earth's heat balance for this period or possible causes of the heat content variability. The
results of multivariate analyses of ocean heat content are presented.
