TI: A Physically Consistent Long-term Reconstruction of the Northern Annular Mode Using Tree
Rings

The Northern Annular Mode has a robust wintertime surface temperature signature that is used here to generate a physically
plausible Northern Annular Mode reconstruction based on select tree species responsive to winter temperature. Ring width
data from these species is shown to adequately record local temperature conditions in regions where the Northern Annular Mode
surface temperature signal is especially strong. Cross-validated results for the reconstruction compare favorably with
existing North Atlantic Oscillation reconstructions and are straightforward to physically interpret. Using other
annually-resolved proxy data to extend this work may more clearly describe the evolution of Northern Hemisphere climate
variability and imply physical constraints to the range of possible future climate outcomes.
