The seasonal variations of the Northern Hemisphere annular mode (NAM) are examined by applying an empirical orthogonal
function (EOF) analysis of the zonally averaged geopotential height fields for each calendar month separately. The summer
NAM has a smaller meridional scale compared to the winter mode. In summer, the Arctic action center of the NAM is located
over the Arctic Ocean, while in winter it is located over Greenland. The winter NAM affects the following summer atmospheric
circulation, and this summer pattern linked to the winter NAM is similar to the summer NAM. The winter-to-summer linkage is
interpreted as a preferable transition from one phase of the winter-dominant mode to the same phase of the summer-dominant
mode.
