AB: Ultra low frequency (ULF) magnetic oscillations have been detected by the Magnetometer/Electron Reflectometer experiment onboard the Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft. On both sides of the bow shock created by the Martian interaction with the solar wind these oscillations have been found to be dominated by resonant proton cyclotron waves. However, closer to the surface of the planet (near the magnetic pileup region) the nature of these waves changes. We present more detailed analyses of the oscillations within this region. We also comment upon the implications of plasma waves for atmospheric loss - both contemporary and historical.
