Scattered waves have been extensively used to characterize the heterogeneity and attenuation properties of the Earth's crust.
Their sensitivity to Earth's discontinuities, like fractures in particular, makes them a potential tool for mapping fracture
patterns and monitoring changes in their properties. We used an acoustic finite difference code to model the effect of small
changes in the scattering coefficient for waves, traveling in a fractured medium. A small change is not easily seen on the
seismogram, but this small change becomes obvious if one takes the difference in the seismograms.
We are developing a technique to monitor changes in water productive fractures at shallow depth in crystalline rock. We
utilize a repeatable seismic source to examine temporal variations in the response during periods of increased or decreased
rate of pumping.
