TI: Variations in GPS strain rate and their relationship to seismic hazard variables in western Turkey

AB: Interrelationships between seismic hazard variables (epicenter distribution (D${q}$), the Gutenberg-Richter b value) and GPS-derived strain fields (shear and normal) are examined in the western Turkey region. This analysis was conducted in three tectonic subdivisions corresponding to regions dominated by shear, extensional, and compressional deformation. The region of shear coincides with the Northern Anatolian Fault Zone; the region of extension, the Hellenic back-arc region; and the region of compression lies along the Hellenic subduction zone between the African and Anatolian plates. Along the NAFZ a significant positive correlation is observed between D and b. However, a clear relationship between D and b does not appear in regions deformed in response to extension and compression. The relationship between D and b along the NAFZ may also be an indicator of increased seismic hazard since the positive relationship between D and b is a recent characteristic of the NAFZ observed only in the 20-year period preceding the Izmit earthquake. The relationship between D and b became increasingly positive compared to earlier analysis conducted over the 1975 through 1988 time period. Interrelationships between D and b to GPS derive shear and normal strains in the region are currently being evaluated.
