The proposed procedure is aimed at the characterization of a virtual PGA distribution of historical earthquakes occurred
in a given seismogenic zone, with respect to a macroseismic approach by which some significant parameters of the
earthquakes, as epicentre, strike, felt area, magnitude are analytically deduced with a vectorial characterisation of
macroseismic intensity.
A geometric representation of a PGA virtual distribution, depicted through ellipses that have centres coinciding with the
calculated epicentre of the earthquake and envelope the homonymous points of PGA, represents an important reference for
seismic hazard studies and allows a configuration of different levels of seismic vulnerability within a damage
scenarios characterisation.
A comparison of the PGA and intensity virtual distributions (Teramo et al., 1998) of a same earthquake allows moreover
a verification between the damage level depicted for a given intensity level and the corresponding PGA value, that is
particularly important within seismic studies of monumental and historical buildings damaged from earthquakes.
