A non-linear analysis of macroseismic data has been performed to determine an empirical relation between macroseismic
magnitude and fault rupture parameters, based on a vectorial modelling of macroseismic intensity distribution (Teramo et
al., 1995, 1997) that allows the determination of magnitude through the earthquake felt area (Termini et al., 2003). The
goal is therefore to characterise an earthquake macroseismic size with respect of observational data through the felt area of
earthquakes, in terms of rupture length and width not related to the fault type.
Such a relation, tested on several historical and recent earthquakes which occurred in Calabria and Sicily (Southern
Italy), shows a good agreement with both the parameters taken from catalogues, previous studies and the Wells and
Coppersmith's formula.
