We analyse the seismograms of the slump episodes occurred at
Stromboli on December 30, 2002. By using a simple single force
model, generally adopted for landslides, we estimate the volume
involved in the single subevents and attempt at a chronological
reconstruction of the whole process. Our results indicate the occurrence of
two main events at 12:15:08 and 12:22:45 UT, respectively.
These could be interpreted as a first submarine slump, causing
the observed tsunami, and a second one above the sea level, not
producing destructive sea waves.
A total volume of about $20\times10^6 m^3$ results for the submarine event,
which developed in about 2 minutes with several
distinct detachments, the first and largest one displacing a
volume of $10.8\times10^6 m^3$. The second, subaerial, mass
sliding sequence interested
$2.5\times10^6 m^3$ at minimum, in about 90 s. These estimates are in
good agreement with independent results from bathymetric and topographic
surveys.
A large long period pulse is also recognizable in the seismograms of the
Stromboli station. We tentatively interpret this feature as corresponding
to the tilt caused by the water load associated with the ingression in the
Ficogrande area, in the northeastern side, close to the recording site.
