AB:
In FD ground motion simulations we encounter the same two major sources of error as in any computer simulation of physical
events:
1) approximation error, due to uncertainties of the input data (e.g. velocity model, q-values, densities, source location
especially source depth etc.) as well as the inherent errors incurred in the discretization of physical models into
computational models, and
2) modeling error, due to natural imperfections of mathematical abstractions of real physical events depending on the
algorithms used in the simulations.
Whereas the latter is subject of numerous studies, the influence of uncertainties in the input data are rarely discussed. To
investigate such effects we performed elastic and visco-elastic finite difference simulations using different models within
the error margins given by the input data sets. The Cologne Basin, NW-Germany, was chosen as study area because it is
seismically one of the most active regions in central Europe and an ML 5.0 event which took place on July 22, 2002 in this
region provides a dataset for comparing synthetic seismograms with observed ones.
