TI: A method for synthesizing strong ground motion by using filters for representing site, path and source
characteristics.

An observed ground motion can be decomposed to site, path and source characteristics. Many studies were devoted to
investigate these characteristics. On the basis of the results of those studies, we propose a new method to synthesis the
ground motions at free field by means of the convolution of source, path, and site effects. The method based on filter
theory assumes that source spectrum is the amplitude function of source filter driven by an impulse. This assumption
introduces the causality of source filter. Thus, each filter has the impulse response of one-side function. As the results,
site and path filters are constructed by minimum-phase filters. This means that the impulse responses of these two filters
are calculated from only the amplitude functions of filters by using the Kramers-Kronig relation. On the contrary, source
filter has the characteristics of a quasi-linear phase filter. The statistical characteristics of synthetic ground motion
are calculated and compared with those of observed earthquakes, by using the convolution of impulse responses obtained from
these three filters.
