In this study, two 3D grid models for subsurface structure of deep sediments in the Kanto plain, Japan, were constructed for
strong motion simulation from geological investigations by Suzuki (1999) and S-wave profiles obtained with microtremor array
explorations by Yamada and Yamanaka (2001). We tested the performance of the 3D structure models from comparison between the
simulated long-period ground velocities during the 1923 Kanto earthquake using a 3D finite difference technique. The
differences between the strong motions are small at sites in the focal region, because the source effects are dominant.
However, they become large at sites out of the focal region due to site effects. As these sensitive depend on the 3D
structure model, we need considerations of setting up the source model for strong ground motion prediction.
