The 1995 (February 5) Waitangi Day sequence, offshore North Island, New Zealand, began with a magnitude 7.0 mainshock and was
followed by 21 smaller events within the first 24 hours of the main rupture. Over the next three weeks a prolific aftershock
sequence ($> 800$ events) continued in the outer rise and trench of the Hikurangi margin. The New Zealand Digital Seismic
Network recorded over 1200 events of this sequence were relocated using HypoDD. Results indicate the sequence progressed from
north to south. Focal mechanisms from the Harvard CMT catalog suggest normal faulting at shallow depths within the
subducting slab. Future work will concentrate determining the stress regime in the area of study and use of empirical Green's
functions to determine the directivity of the mainshock. Broadband data is also available and will be used to determine
focal mechanisms for the aftershock sequence.
