We present results from rocket borne in situ measurements of
mesospheric turbulence obtained in the course of the international
MIDAS/MacWave project. We apply a new data analysis technique
based on wavelet analysis and identify turbulent layers with
vertical extents from 100 m up to several kilometer. Our
observations show that we observed the mesopause region in an
extremely untypical dynamical state, in particular characterized
by the fact that strong turbulence was observed below an altitude
of 80 km. Evidence for this extraordinary behaviour is further
identified in wind and temperature profiles obtained with
meteorological rockets that accompanied the launches of the
instrumented sounding rockets. Finally, we discuss our
observations in the scope of current understanding of the role of
breaking gravity waves for the dynamical and thermal structure of
the mesopause region.
