AB: The interaction of the solar wind with the Earth's geomagnetic field leads to a complex current system within the magnetosphere. Understanding this current system requires a global treatment of the solar wind-magnetosphere- ionosphere system. Global magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations provide a reasonable description of the large-scale structure of the Earth's magnetosphere as it responds to changes in the interplanetary magnetic field. Modeling the inner magnetosphere, however, is limited by the lack of a proper representation of ring current formation. We will consider moderate storm events and compare the plasma pressure distribution in the inner magnetosphere from the MHD result to observed storm intervals. This will allow us to quantify the contributions of ring current particles in the ring current region. We will discuss the inclusion of the physical effects of the ring current in the MHD solutions.
