We present a Cluster multi-experiment study of outflowing ion beams inside the auroral zone and inside the polar cap. Data
are taken at altitudes of the order of 4 RE. At such high
altitudes, discrete auroral events of ion outflows can still show the typical particle and field structures reported at lower
altitudes; field aligned upgoing ion beams, downgoing electrons, and a converging electric field structure. Inside the polar
cap,the same kind of events are also seen. However, many cases of low energy outflowing ion beams display a quite different
particle and field topology indicating that the paralell electric field is not strong enough to cause the loss of the
precipitating electrons. Both donwngoing and
upgoing electrons display a peaked spectra at the same energy, in the 100 eV range. These observations tend to show that the
paralell electric field is here weak and widely distributed in altitude. We discuss these events in terms of
magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling.
