AB: The availability of imaging riometer data from the Automatic Geophysical Observatories (AGOs) P5 and P6, located a few degrees on either side of the southern geomagnetic dipole provides an unprecedented opportunity to study polar cap absorption (PCA) events at the highest latitudes to date. Of equal importance is the opportunity provided by these imaging instruments, together with similar instruments at other AGO sites and South Pole, for investigations of the spatial structure with time of the absorption events. The imaging riometer data are used together with interplanetary charged particle measurements from the EPAM instrument on the ACE spacecraft to provide new understanding into the effects of solar particle events on the very high latitude ionosphere. Results from studies of three events in 2000 (February 18, November 8, November 24) will be discussed in some detail.
