TI: Ground based OI 630.0 nm Observations of Sunlit Cusp from Sondrestromfjord, Greenland

AB: We have used a high resolution (0.01 nm)imaging spectrograph to measure auroral emissions along the magnetic north-south meridian from Sondrestromfjord, Greenland ($67\deg$ N, $51\deg$ W; $74.5\deg$ N Mag. Lat.). The red line (OI 630.0nm) emission intensities during a magnetically disturbed day (January 21, 2001) showed significant enhancement near local noon (SZA ~$86\deg$). Salient characteristics of the observations include (1) a gradual buildup in column emission rates of up to 3000 R, which is a four-fold increase above the normal dayglow emission rates, (2) a sharp equator-ward boundary, and (3) a poleward moving form following the emission peak. These are characteristic signatures of emissions of magnetospheric cusp origin. Simultaneous incoherent scatter radar measurements show a significant increase in Te (up to 4500 K) in the directions of optical emission enhancement. Model intensities using the radar measurements of Ne, Te, and Ti are consistent with our observations.
