Mid-latitude east-west geomagnetic disturbances on the nightside are attributed to field-aligned currents at high-latitudes.
In order to discuss storm-time variations in field-aligned currents on the nightside, we examined east-west geomagnetic
disturbance fields at mid-latitudes on the nightside for some geomagnetic storms. The results indicate that upward
field-aligned currents are developed on the nightside (esp. in the post-midnight) under the condition that the interplanetary
magnetic field (IMF) is directed southward. It is also suggested that substorm expansions have a secondary effect on the
upward field-aligned currents on the nightside. We will discuss some possible mechanisms of substorms on the upward currents
in the post-midnight.
