AB: Chorus waves have been established as an important ingredient in the dynamics of outer zone electrons, especially in the aftermath of geomagnetic storms. Low plasma density conditions (plasma frequency comparable to cyclotron frequency) are especially favorable for significant changes in particle energy. The quasilinear formulation of cyclotron-resonant interactions gives diffusion coefficients in pitch angle and energy for this process. A newly developed form of the dispersion relation for such chorus waves yields upper and lower bounds on the index of refraction, which are very useful in evaluating the diffusion coefficients in this setting, in the same spirit as previous versions for hiss and EMIC waves. The method will be described, the diffusion coefficients evaluated, and the physical consequences will be presented.
