TI: An Electrochemical Model for the Inception and Prediction of Earthquakes

AB: Much has been said and written about increased pore pressures prior to earthquake events. I will present a model that shows how the pore pressure in rocks increases catastrophically due to simple electrochemical principles. The model is applicable to all rocks under stress in contact with aqueous pore fluids. Its simplicity probably means that the mechanism is ubiquitous in the crust. Additionally, this new model of the earthquake source suggests that significant electrical signals will be created in the hypocenter region.
