We use data of recently installed broadband seismographs on
the islands of Crete, Gavdos, Santorini, Naxos and Samos to
constract receiver function images of the crust and upper
mantle from the south of Crete into the Aegean Sea. The
subducting African plate is clearly imaged at 44km below
Gavdos, about 70km below Crete and nearly 100km beneath
Santorini. The Moho depth is determined from direct
conversions and crustal multiples. It is 31-34km deep below
southern and eastern Crete, and 32-39 below western and
northern Crete. The Moho signal in western and northern
Crete is reversed, possibly indicating velocity reduction
instead of increase at the Moho. This phenomenon could be
caused by hydration and serpentinization of the mantle
peridotite in the forearc. The crustal thickness at Gavdos,
south of Crete in the Libyan Sea is only 26km. The Moho in
the central and northern Aegean, at Naxos and Samos is at
25 and 28km depth, respectively. S receiver functions are at
present analysed to produce an image of the upper mantle
unspoiled by crustal multiples.
