The ever-increasing volume and diversity of heliospheric data sets along with newly emerging information technology standards
make it desirable and possible to develop a distributed data environment for heliospheric data sets that is user-friendly.
Preliminary design concepts from the ad-hoc Virtual Heliospheric Observatory (VHO) team will be presented. The current
configurations envision the development of only a very thin layer of middleware that will provide a uniform search capability
to locate the desired data sets. The data retrieval would take place directly between the data provider and the user.
Possible functionalities and requirements on the middleware and on the participating data providers will be discussed.
