Air pollution contributes to mortality and respiratory disease worldwide, with developing countries at highest risk. The
World Health Organization estimates that between 1.4 and 6 million people die each year from air pollution, and in some
populations up to 30 % of all respiratory disease may be linked to air pollution. As the climate changes, increasing
temperatures and changing precipitation patterns are expected to yield new health challenges and may worsen existing risks.
This talk provides an overview of issues linking health impacts of air pollution and climate change, as an introduction for
the session. Increasingly, health-driven projects are employing state-of-the-art modeling and measurement methodologies. We
discuss how quantitative assessment methodologies have been used to understand the connections between health, air pollution
and climate.
