Community usage of HDF-EOS has reached a complex state of affairs. HDF4 - based products from EOS Terra and Aqua instruments
are mature and there is a growing availability of applications. New products are continuously being produced and
applications need to be upgraded. HDF5 - based, HDF-EOS is being used by EOS Aura product developers and HDF5 is essentially
a different data format than HDF4. It has become necessary to provide functionality for accessing, reformatting, subsetting,
reprojecting, and so for data based in both HDF formats. When EOS Aura becomes operational next year, it will be important
to provide tools for accessing data in both formats simultaneously for comparison purposes. Our goal will be to provide
tools that render the details of the internal structure of HDF-EOS files transparent to users, whether they are HDF4 or HDF5
- based.
We will summarize the functionality in various freeware tools provided by the EOS Project. For example, HDFView is a new tool
which can access and browse HDF4, HDF5. A version of HDFView with an HDF-EOS plug-in will be available in late 2003. The
HDF-EOS to GeoTIFF (HEG) tool can convert HDF-EOS to GeoTIFF and also provides subsetting, reprojection, subsampling and
resampling functionality. The tool provides these functions on-demand as part of the ECS Data Pool and is also available as a
downloadable desktop version. In 2004, an OpenGIS Web Coverage Service will be provided for HDF-EOS products through the
HEG interface. We will discuss conversion of HDF4 to HDF5 - based products and additional applications.
