NASA's Earth Science Enterprise (ESE) has initiated a new process for developing recommendations for adoption of standards
for application to ESE data systems. The process, modeled after the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), and other
similar standards bodies, and tailored for NASA's unique concerns is designed to guide NASA to adoption of standards that
have demonstrated implementations and successful operational experience in the context of Earth Science Data Systems. This
process was proposed by the Strategy for Evolution of ESE Data Systems (SEEDS) effort and begins operation this fall. It is
guided by a new Standards Process Group that leverages the broad expertise of NASA funded data systems in NASA new Earth
Science Research, Education, and Applications Solutions Network (REASoN) together with the experience of the ESE's other data
system implementation projects. Successful candidate standards for adoption by the ESE will have the following properties:
They will be "Community" interoperable. That is, they will respond to and by guided by the needs of particular and
specified "communities of interest" so that only needed standards are adopted, and unnecessary standards avoided.
They will be "Working edge" rather than "Leading edge". The ESE will adopt only standards that are proven to work in the ESE
context. They will be understood. The process requires adequate specification and proof of implementation. And the will
be reliable in the sense that science, applications and software developers will have confidence in the standard.
This poster outlines the Standards Process and explains how the process will produce standards adoption recommendations that
fulfill the standards qualities listed above.
