AB: Until few years ago, the volcanoes were usually considered systems without significant interactions with the surrounding regions. This paradigm was recently put in doubt by the finding of a coupling between large explosive volcanic eruptions and tectonic earthquakes occurring from years to few decades before and at distances up to hundreds of kilometers. This coupling has been explained theoretically by modeling the co- and post-seismic stress variations induced by the regional earthquakes on the volcanoes at the onset of the eruptions. The stress variation consists of the elastic response of the lithosphere, and the viscoelastic relaxation of the asthenosphere and mantle, computed through a spherical, stratified, self-gravitating, viscoelastic earth model. Here, we apply this model to two recent large tectonic earthquakes occurred in Sumatra (June 2000) and Alaska (Denali earthquake, November 2002), in order to estimate the stress perturbation (dilatation/compression and shear) on the Indonesia and Alaska volcanic chains. Then, we estimate the effects of such seismic stress perturbations on the future volcanic hazard in Indonesia and Alaska.
