TI: A Molecular Level View of Sea Salt Chemistry in the Troposphere

Many field studies over the past several decades have established the importance of halogen chemistry in the troposphere.
However, there are a number of puzzling field observations that are inconsistent with known chemistry in the gas and bulk
aqueous phases. This highlights the need to understand the chemistry on a molecular level, in order to accurately model the
results of field experiments and understand the impact of halogens on tropospheric chemistry. The results of recent
laboratory studies suggest that, under some circumstances, unique chemistry at the air-water interface contributes to
activation of halide ions into photochemically active halogen compounds that serve as sources of gaseous halogen atoms in the
troposphere. The results of recent mechanistic and kinetics studies of interface reactions and the implications for their
potential contributions to the chemistry of atmospheric halogens will be presented.
