The chemical composition of aerosols over the Northeast United States was measured in summer 2004 from the NOAA P 3 using
single particle analysis, an aerosol mass spectrometer, and on-line ion chromatography. All three techniques show a large
role for organics in free tropospheric aerosols. The organic content was especially high in biomass burning plumes, but the
organics were not restricted to that area. Information will be shown on the relative amounts of organics and sulfate as a
function of particle size. The single particle data support uptake of nitrate and chlorine by dust and also show a puzzling
pattern of widespread trace amounts of Pb in particles.
