In the summer of 2004 extensive forest fires burned in Alaska and western Canada. In-situ measurements of the aged forest
fire plumes were made on board the NOAA WP-3D research aircraft over the northeastern U.S. and southeastern Canada during the
International Consortium for Atmospheric Research on Transport and Transformation (ICARTT) field campaign in July and August
2004. The forest fire plumes were tracked with satellite pictures and FLEXPART model simulations. Concentrations of volatile
organic compounds and the chemical composition of single aerosol particles in air masses containing forest fire emissions
showed significant differences compared to background air or to pollution from urban and industrial sources. One second
measurements of the number and volume of particles with diameters from 0.004 to 8 μm were highly correlated with CO
mixing ratio measurements in individual forest fire plumes. The smoke was characterized by mass-weighted diameters between
0.6 and 1 μm - much larger than secondary particles typical of urban and industrial sources. Most of the detectable
submicron mass was in the form of water-soluble organic material.
Enhancements of particle volume relative to CO varied between individual plumes, indicating different conditions during
production and transport. Removal of particles and water soluble trace gases suggest cloud processing in certain plumes, an
interpretation supported by analysis using the FLEXPART transport model. However, the statistics for single particle
composition were similar in scavenged and unprocessed plumes, indicating that the cloud scavenging was not strongly dependent
upon particle composition.
