AB: The analytical method of 2-Dimensional Gas Chromatography (GCxGC) coupled with Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry (TOFMS) has gained considerable attention in recent years for its ability to identify complex organic compounds. In this system sample material is collected in a multi-bed pre-concentration unit before injection as a narrow vapor plug into the separation (GCxGC) and identification (TOFMS) systems. The GCxGC system consists of a serial arrangement of two GC columns connected by a thermal modulator. The breadboard instrument has been operated with both a Flame Ionization Detector (FID) and a TOFMS detector. In the summer of 2005 this instrument was deployed to the University of Michigan Biological Station (UMBS) in Northern Michigan. The GCxGC TOFMS technique and preliminary results of measurements of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) collected from this field campaign will be presented.
