Particle number densities and size distributions are fundamental aerosol microphysical properties from which climatic effects
and chemical transformations can be derived. For these reasons, these parameters were measured aboard the airborne
platforms deployed during the NASA INTEX-NA and NOAA NEAQS ITCT 2004 field campaigns. To ensure that the resulting data sets
can be used interchangeably and merged into a unified database, we have performed a detailed comparison of the aerosol
measurements recorded during wing-tip to wing-tip flight maneuvers carried out during these missions. Three such
inter-comparison legs between NASA DC-8 and NOAA WP-3D were conducted during joint INTEX-NA and NEAQS ITCT2004 flight
operations from Portsmouth, New Hampshire in late July and early August of 2004. These flight legs, around 45 minutes in
length each, provided excellent opportunities to compare two particle size distribution measurements made using quite
different approaches. The comparison of the size distributions for accumulation and fine particles modes are made
separately. For each mode, we present time series of integrated number and volume density, selected number and volume size
distributions, and correlations between the integrated quantities. The integrated quantities (i.e., number and volume
density) are highly correlated. However, there are some significant differences in the regression slopes. These differences
are also reflected in the size distributions. Preliminary analysis suggests a potential high bias in the WP-3D accumulation
mode measurements related to humidity effects and calibration uncertainties.
