We compared in-situ airborne chemical characterization performance between a dual PILS-ICs-TOC
(Particle-Into-Liquid-Sampler-Ion Chromatographs-Total Organic Carbon Analyzer) system and an AMS (Aerosol Mass Spectrometer)
during the 2002 New England Air Quality Study. Major inorganic ions such as NH4+, K+, Na+, Ca2+,
Mg2+, Cl-, SO42-, NO2-, and NO3- were determined using one PILS coupled with two ICs
with 3 minutes time resolution, whereas the AMS acquired data at a much faster rate, 30 seconds, to determine NH4+,
Cl-,SO42-, NO3-, and total organic compounds. Comparison was made between PILS-IC and AMS
concerning major inorganic ion determination. Effort was also made to compare the dissolved total organic carbon determined
by a second PILS coupled with an on-line TOC and total organic compounds by AMS. Factors such as instrument operation
conditions, inlet loss, geological conditions, and solubility of aerosol components may have contributed to the discrepancy
between these two state-of-science aerosol in-situ instruments.
