AB: The NOAA Aeronomy Laboratory has upgraded its high altitude capabilities by developing a trace gas payload for the NOAA Gulfstream GIV-SP aircraft. The aircraft, operated by the NOAA Aircraft Operations Center, has a maximum operating altitude of 45000 ft and a range of more than 3500 nm.
Earlier this summer a new window mounted trace gas inlet was certified and installed. Trace gas measurements employing a Proton Transfer Reaction Mass Spectrometer (PTR-MS), an ozone UV absorption photometer and a VUV fluorescence Carbon Monoxide instrument were deployed to test and verify the capabilities of the new inlet.
The inlet system consists of a 6 in aluminum airfoil stub mounted to an aluminum window blank. Three separate inlets are lined with 0.25 in OD Teflon tubing and thermostated at 35° C.
We will present data from VOC, O3, and CO measurements gathered on several flights out of MacDill AFB just outside Tampa, FL. They show vertical profiles, biogenic emissions over northern Florida, fresh pollution close to Tampa, and more processed outflow advected from the Tampa/St. Petersburgh area to the east.
