TI: Ozone Profiles Measured at South Pole Station During the 2005 Ozone Hole

AB: Vertical profiles of ozone and temperature over Amundsen Scott South Pole station have been measured each year since 1986 using balloon-borne Electrochemical Concentration Cell (ECC) ozonesondes. The minimum total column ozone (10 year average of 104 ñ 18 Dobson Units) typically occurs in late September and early October over South Pole. The severity of ozone depletion depends on wintertime stratospheric temperatures, stability of the polar vortex, and active chlorine levels. In 2005, the July and August profiles showed very cold temperatures throughout the lower stratosphere. The coldest average temperature within the 20-24 km layer was 180.9 K (-92.3 C) occurring on July 10. The early August average temperature was 184 K (-89.2 C), just slightly colder than the long term average. Total column ozone was very stable throughout the first 3 weeks of August, 2005 at 269 ñ 3 DU, before dropping to 222 DU by August 28. In September and October the frequency of ozonesonde launches will increase to 2 to 3 per week to more closely track the rate of depletion, the extent of zero ozone levels observed in the altitude range from 12-24 km, and the minimum total column ozone value measured. The data will be compared to previous South Pole measurements as part of the search for signs of long term recovery of the yearly Antarctic ozone hole.
