AB: Ground-based measurements of ClO, ClONO2, and HCl made at Scott Base (the New Zealand Antarctic base) and the Arrival Heights laboratory (both at 77.8°S, 5 km apart) are used to investigate the chlorine partitioning during the Antarctic late winter and spring period for the last seven years 1998-2004. This time period includes the unusual 2002 spring season, when the vortex was disrupted by a major stratospheric warming. This event affected both the chemical and the dynamical state of the stratosphere over Arrival Heights; earlier chlorine deactivation was observed and the site was outside the vortex for brief periods resulting in measured ozone columns in excess of 450 DU. ClO measurements made in 2002, when the observation site was well within the vortex, were lower than observations made during the previous four years and indicate that the chlorine activation inside the polar vortex was about 25% less during spring 2002. The measured partial column abundances of ClO, ClONO2, and HCl are compared with model calculations from the 3D SLIMCAT chemical transport model. The observed extent of chlorine activation and its variability, the timing of the chlorine deactivation and the partitioning between HCl and ClONO2 during the deactivation period are compared to the model results and discussed in detail.
