TI: Using GLAS/ICESat Data to Investigate Evidences of Polar Stratospheric Clouds

AB: Data from the Geoscience Laser Altimeter System (GLAS) instrument aboard the ICESat satellite from September 25, 2003 to November 18, 2003 in the south polar region are used to describe polar stratospheric cloud (PSC) observations. The data we use include attenuated backscatter for the 532 nm and 1064 nm channels and extinction profiles at 1 sec resolution for clouds and at 4 sec resolution for aerosols. We also use data from the U.K. Meteorological Office, which provides wind and temperature data that can be used to locate the south polar vortex during the period. Using these measurements, evidence of PSCs is found and the cluster analysis technique is used to classify these PSCs. We present probability distribution functions of the lidar attenuated backscatter at 1064nm and 532nm and the spatial distribution probabilities for the different PSC types. In the future, this analysis will be applied to data from the Cloud Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations (CALIPSO) mission.
