AB: The Cloud and Aerosol Research in the Marine Atmosphere III (CARMA III) field campaign took place during August, 2005 off the coast of Monterey, California, exploring the relationship between the marine aerosol chemical, physical and optical properties and those of the overlying stratocumulus deck. The oceanic upwelling offshore of California also provides nutrients to support large phytoplankton blooms, a major natural source of primary organic matter found in marine aerosols. Previous field campaigns in the region identified on average 22% of the chemically resolved mass as organic, and 7% on average was insoluble organic material. However, the impact of the organic matter on aerosol properties remains unclear. The organic composition of the marine aerosols observed during CARMA III will be explored using several different laboratory techniques, including a novel analysis of individual aerosols using Scanning Electron Microscopy and Total Electron Microscopy (SEM/TEM). Additionally, the relationship between the organic material and aerosol hygroscopicity and cloud condensation nuclei activity will be explored.
