Since the detection of unexpectedly high mixing ratios of BrO up to 170 ppt in 1997 at the Dead Sea, Israel, the influence of
halogen oxides on the tropospheric chemistry outside polar regions is well established. A dependence between halogen oxides
and ozone was detected but the complex interaction system could not be clearly answered. It became clear that more precise
and extensive measurements were necessary in order to understand the chemical processes in detail.
Because of its geographical position and topography the Dead Sea valley provides 'large scale laboratory' conditions for
surface studies between salt water, boundary layer atmosphere and land, resp. salt deposits. Additionally, daily recurring
meteorological conditions permit well defined transport studies.
Here we present the results of the field campaign performed in summer 2004 at the Dead Sea By using the MAX-DOAS (Multi AXis
Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy) technique, the qualitative and quantitative occurrence of BrO was investigated
at several sites along the Dead Sea. Furthermore, ozone monitoring and measurements of meteorology were done.
In particular, vertical and horizontal profile measurements of BrO in the tropospheric boundary layer will be discussed.
Radiation transport phenomena will be a matter of interest as well as chemical interactions with other trace gases.
