Measurements of HCl and other inorganic chlorine gases at Appledore Island, Maine (42.98708N, 70.61539W, 43m ASL) made as
part of the Chemistry of Halogens at the Isles of Shoals (CHAiOS) component of the July-August 2004 ICARTT intensive suggest
that greater than 100,000 Cl atoms per cubic centimeter may have been present at times (J. Stutz et al., this session).
Hydrocarbon data obtained over the Gulf of Maine from NOAA Ship Ronald H. Brown during the ICARTT intensive also suggest the
possibility of active Cl chemistry occurring in surface air that had been over water for a day or more (P. Goldan, et al.,
this session). Here, data for 51 non-methane hydrocarbons and 12 halocarbons from hourly canister samples collected at the
Appledore Island site will be examined for evidence of oxidation by Cl. Exposure to Cl will be estimated for each canister
sample based on local meteorology and on over-water transit times determined using 36-hour surface air back trajectories
calculated from regional NOAA/ETL profiler network data and from ocean buoy data from the Gulf of Maine and adjacent waters.
