Reactive chlorine and bromine compounds can have a significant impact on gas and aerosol chemistry in the marine boundary
layer. Their chemistry catalytically destroys O3, oxidizes hydrocarbons, dimethylsulfide, and S(IV), and modifies NO_x
and HO_x cycling. In addition, the phase partitioning of HCl regulates aerosol pH and associated pH-dependent reactions
including halogen activation and S(IV) oxidation.
Despite their significance for marine boundary layer chemistry, few observations of reactive chlorine and bromine species and
their precursors have been reported. Here we present a comprehensive data set of measurements of halogen species, their
precursors, and aerosol composition acquired in summer 2004 during the CHAiOS field experiment in the Gulf of Maine.
Observations show HCl mixing ratios of up to 2 ppb, non-HCl inorganic chlorine mixing ratios between 50 - 400 ppt, and
aerosol chloride deficits of up to 90%. Bromine levels were generally found to be low. Our data will be discussed with
respect to sources of chlorine atoms precursors, the steady state chlorine atom concentration, and the general impact of
bromine and chlorine on ozone concentrations.
