AB: One of the goals of Chemistry of Halogens at the Isles of Shoals (CHAiOS) is understanding the relationship between gas-phase precursors and aerosol formation and growth. There were more than fifteen events with significant particle concentrations at diameters less than 20 nm. Of these, fifteen show a consistent increase in particle size over several hours of steady meteorological conditions. Most of these growth events were first detected at approximately 8:00 am local time, indicating a possible correlation with photochemistry. The calculated growth rates range from 3.9 to 15 nm hr-1 with an average of 6.4 nm hr-1. Simultaneous measurements of criteria pollutants, oxidants and halogens revealed high background concentrations that were characteristic of continental air masses. The results show that production and growth of new particles are controlled by multiple processes and precursors. Most events occur on days with high concentrations of biogenic volatile organic compounds.
