TI: Remote sensing observations of boreal forest fire smoke in the stratosphere

AB: During the CRYSTAL-FACE mission in 2002 out of Key West, Florida, highly polluted layers were detected in the stratosphere, by in-situ instruments aboard the NASA WB-57. The source of these particle rich layers was traced back to intense forest fires over North America. Here we present mostly data from the Cloud Physics Lidar to assess the extent of the cloud over Florida and the Gulf of Mexico. We discuss the aerosol optical properties of the polluted layers and the implications for radiative effects on the stratosphere.
