AB: Boreal forest in Siberia contains approximately one-fourth of the world's terrestrial biomass. It is essential to quantify the amount of trace gases, especially carbon-containing compounds, emitted from biomass burning in Siberia in order to understand its contribution to the global carbon cycle. We have conducted a series of biomass burning experiments in the Scotch pine ecosystems in central Siberia from 2000 to 2003. The fires spanned a range of fire intensities, from low to medium-high. Smoke emission samples from these experiments were collected into canisters at ground level and from a helicopter. For the helicopter canister samples, trace gas concentrations of CO2, CO, H2, CH4, ethylene, ethane, propylene, propane, and sixteen C4-C7 hydrocarbons were measured by gas chromatography. Emission factors of these gases were reported, and the relationship of fire intensity and other behavior and fuel consumption parameters to emission factors was analyzed to determine whether fire intensity had a significant impact on the emissions of trace gases. Ground level fire emission samples were collected during flaming and smoldering combustion of lichens, down wood and understory vegetation. For the ground emission samples, no significant differences were found in the ratios of CO2, CH4, and C2-C3 hydrocarbons to CO for different fire intensities.
