TI: High-Resolution Simulations of the Atmospheric Boundary Layer and Surface-Atmosphere Interactions in
the Arctic

Non-hydrostatic simulations using two mesoscale atmospheric models have been performed for the Arctic with resolutions of
0.5-14 km. The goals of the simulations were twofold: (1) assessment of the snow drift contribution to the accumulation
process over Greenland, and (2) study of the boundary layer over the sea ice of the inner Arctic. The interactions between
atmosphere and snowpack of Greenland are of high importance for questions of the mass balance of the ice sheet. For goal (1),
the operational local model (LM) of the German Meteorological Service is applied for simulations over Greenland at a
horizontal resolution of about 14 km. The study focuses on the period 3-12 July 2002, during which an aircraft-based field
experiment was performed at the station Summit. LM results are used to drive the snow model SNOWPACK, yielding snow drift
fields for the entire area of Greenland. For goal (2), the simulations focus on April 2003, when the aircraft-based
experiment ABSIS (Arctic Boundary Layer and Sea Ice Study) took place in the frame of the German ACSYS project. A
comprehensive data set was collected including a research aircraft and two ships, allowing the comparison of boundary layer
structures with model simulations. LM is run for the period 1-15 April 2003 with a resolution of 9 km, and high-resolution
simulations were performed for case studies using the model FOOT3DK (University of Koeln) nested in LM. FOOT3DK is run with
resolutions of 2 km and 500 m. Comparisons with the ABSIS data set show a good agreement for the boundary layer structures
and near-surface quantities, but also deficiencies of the parameterization schemes in Arctic regions.
