The Clean Air Sector Laboratory (CASLab) at the British Antarctic research station, Halley, is dedicated to the study of
tropospheric chemistry and air/snow exchange. It was designed to accommodate a range of trace gas instrumentation, as well as
housing the BAS Boundary Layer Meteorology suite of instruments. Situated in coastal Antarctica, in a clean air sector, at a
distance of 1.3km from the main base, it is suitable for both intensive campaigns and long term monitoring.
Instruments/techniques used at the lab to date include sampling firn air at various depths to 20m, snow pit sampling, long
path absorption spectroscopy, laser induced fluorescence, gas and liquid chromatography, filter, denuder and flask sampling
and in-situ liquid flow methods among others. Considerable and numerous challenges were surmounted in setting up the
laboratory and operating the first year-round campaign there. Examples of the sampling and analysis methods used will be
presented as well as a discussion of the logistics and difficulties that occur when running a year-round campaign in
Antarctica.
