Current pure gas photochemistry modeling cannot accurately predict the high levels of HONO observed at South Pole during
ANTCI 2003. A 1D photochemistry model is developed and applied to observational data. Model inputs include deposition of
HNO3, concentration of nitrate and nitrite, hydrolysis of NO2, pH of snow, adsorption and desorption of HONO on quasi liquid
layer of snow, etc; the model will estimate the snowpack emission term as well as gas-phase production and loss.
Meteorological conditions associated with the transport of HONO are studied to determine if transport significantly affects
HONO concentrations. Finally, the observed HONO will be analyzed to determine its contribution to the HOx budget.
