Aerosol influence on climate is currently the subject of intense research by both
modeling and remote sensing scientific communities. Advanced instruments such as MODerate
resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) and Multiangle Imaging Spectro-Radiometer (MISR)
provide the best currently available global data on aerosol amount size and
composition. However the longest aerosol records important for climate studies are
derived from the instruments not originally designed for aerosol research such as
Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) and Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer
(TOMS).
Global Aerosol Climatology Project dataset is one of the longest continuous global
dataset of aerosol amount and Angstrom exponent.
Here we present an extension of this product covering the period from August 1981 to the
end of 2004. It covers two major volcanic eruptions (El Chichon and Pinatubo) as well as
a number of dust and biomass burning events of regional importance. We discuss global and
regional features of the aerosol optical thickness and Angstrom exponent over ocean.
We performed an in-depth comparison of AVHRR, MISR, MODIS/Terra and MODIS/Aqua aerosol
retrievals for the period when contemporaneous data are available. By
performing analysis for areas predominantly affected by different types of aerosol such as clear maritime,
dust etc. we analyze the performance of AVHRR retrieval algorithm and the adequacy of the
microphysical model. The comparison provides a bridge
between the historical AVHRR
record and the data from the new advanced instruments thus helping to
understand the limitaions of the former and increasing the value of the later.
