AURAMS (A Unified Regional Air-quality Modeling System) is a size- and composition-resolved, episodic, regional particulate
matter modelling system developed at the Meteorological Service of Canada (MSC) over the past several years. AURAMS was run
in real time in the summer of 2004 during the ICARTT field campaign. The real-time AURAMS forecast was used (1) to support
flight operations of an MSC instrumented aircraft based in Cleveland OH; and (2) to participate in a multi-model real-time
evaluation and ensemble exercise carried out by NOAA/AL and NOAA/ETL. Since the campaign, several retrospective AURAMS runs
have been conducted for the same period with updated emissions (biogenic, anthropogenic, and revised estimates of U.S. NOx
emissions from major point sources) and a more up-to-date version of the meteorological model, including a new surface
parameterization to account for the urban heat island effect. This presentation will summarize the impact of the various
model updates on the modelling system's performance. The evaluation will be based on both surface ozone and PM measurements
(AIRNow network) and data obtained from mobile platforms, particularly from the Convair 580 flights carried out by MSC during
the 2004 ICARTT field campaign.
