Over the past decade, US electric power generation plants have increasingly employed NOx pollution controls during the summer
ozone season (May - September). Ozone season NOx emissions measured at power plants in the Eastern United States have
correspondingly decreased by 50 percent since 1999. To validate this emission trend and understand its effects, monthly mean
NO2 column concentrations in the Eastern US simulated by the Weather Research and Forecasting Chemistry (WRF-Chem) model are
compared with SCIAMACHY satellite measurements. The WRF-Chem simulations are performed before and during the 2004 ozone
season using the NEI 1999, the latest final emission inventory from the EPA. Before the 2004 ozone season, the model results
agree well with SCIAMACHY measurements, demonstrating that the NEI 1999 properly represents relatively uncontrolled power
plant NOx emissions. 2004 ozone season model NO2 column concentrations are much higher than the SCIAMACHY data in regions
with strong NOx-emitting power plants, such as the Ohio River valley, North Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama. The discrepancy
demonstrates the inventory's overestimation of NOx emissions during the most recent ozone season.
